Joe Morris Solo Tonight in Brooklyn

I vividly remember Joe Morris telling me about his solo stuff over a beer one afternoon 20 years ago. The celebrated guitarist explained how African string music and delta blues informed his approach. Joe’s got a way with words, so his descriptions really stuck. Later, when he dropped his first solo album No Vertigo (Leo), those words became even more vivid. The tumble-of-notes approach that he uses in ensemble work is there when he plays alone, but a certain flintiness  is present as well – call it grit. At this late date Morris is regularly applauded for his improvising adventures with innumerable colleagues – the solo stuff doesn’t make the spotlight all that often. That makes tonight’s show at the Snugs Series (61 Bergen Street, Brooklyn) a must-see. Saxophonist Jim Hobbs plays alone at 7 pm and Morris begins at 8 pm. Hope he brings his banjouke…
