John Escreet Quartet   @ Jazz Gallery April 9

The new Sound, Space and Structures (Sunnyside) reminds that abstraction can have lots of contoured lyricism on its side, regardless of how jittery the action gets. The pianist knows tension, too, nudging simple escapades into dangerous dances with the flick of a wrist. On paper tonight’s foursome of Tyshawn Sorey, François Moutin and Amir ElSaffar, seems like it could follow suit. One thing’s certain: Escreet‘s dedication to nuance will spark a similarly detailed discussion by his cohort.
