Vijay Iyer says he thinks about Thelonious Monk every day, and you can tell that plenty of pondering went into the spin of the maestro’s “Work” that helps center Iyer’s new Break Stuff (ECM). Without ironing out the rough spots, the celebrated pianist’s trio gives its version a soaring vibe – it seems like very little work is going on at all as it whisks you away. Smoke and mirrors of course. The band’s chemistry comes from years of bandstand ardor; both bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore propel the music with tricks learned hard-earned experience. It’s going to be fun to hear the scope of Break Stuff play out at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Temple of Dendur on Saturday night. It’s the first NYC gig since the album arrived a few weeks ago, and there’s a celebratory air surrounding it.
