Chris Potter began the year making jaws drop while guiding a plush ensemble through elaborate arrangements on ECM’s Imaginary Cities — there’s authority in the air when the saxophonist careens around a chart. That kind of command can be riveting in stark relief, as will be the case when he ends 2015 leading two trios at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. In the large, Potter has concentrated on contexts other than horn, bass, and drums, a bedrock jazz design that provides players with plenty of elbow room. So it should be intriguing to watch him pass the ball around with discrete rhythm sections comprising Drew Gress and Adam Cruz and Scott Colley and Johnathan Blake (tonight and tomorrow). Each is deft in the give ‘n’ take department, and Potter’s blend of smarts and stamina is always at the avail. The agility meter will be in the red zone for this one.
