Dan Tepfer Acoustic Informatics Monday 2.8

With insightful spins on “Goldberg Variations” and gnarly duets with Lee Konitz behind him, it’s easy to see that Dan Tepfer takes his improv challenges seriously. Ideas always flow when he’s at the keyboard, but his latest project invites a whole new level of melodic variation to the table. The strategy of “Acoustic Informatics” finds the pianist programming a Yamaha Disklavier to respond to the phrase and passages he concocts on the fly, as well as send digitally notated music to on-stage cohorts in real time. At LPR that’s going to be a clarinet-bassoon-flute-sax subset of the acclaimed International Contemporary Ensemble. Bet they’re eager to be peppered with the kind of provocations that Tepfer says blends “the algorithmic and the spiritual.”
