The bond between Dave Holland and Kevin Eubanks started with the celebrated 1990 joint Extensions (ECM) and has intermittently continued through 2013’s Prism (Dare2)- the 69-year-old bassist likes having the 57-year-old guitarist close by, regardless of whether they’re operating in a trio or a quartet, at a cozy club or a festival stage. Maybe it’s because they are both string virtuosos perpetually on the hunt for a spot where their chemistry will shine. Doesn’t matter if it’s a lithe blues with lots of open space or a shit storm of brainy jazz-funk, invention is always up front in their work. This week at the Village Vanguard they share the stage with Obed Calvaire, a spark-plug drummer keen on polyrhythms, expert at Caribbean inflections and dedicated to uplift. Tiny room, big music.
