Newport Jazz Fest Countdown: Donny McCaslin Quartet

The molten prog that Donny McCaslin and the bulk of his current foursome brings to the Thin White Duke’s keenly abstract and rightly ballyhooed Blackstar is the result of requisite agility, free thinking and deep musicianship. But in McCaslin’s world, that’s pretty much always been the case. The intrepid saxophonist’s 2015 joint Fast Future (Greenleaf) signaled a shift towards the kind of cinematic funk that squeezes tension into every measure of a performance. On top rides the boss, surfing the beats with that mighty tenor, and aiming towards the spot where frenzy reaps visceral rewards and aggression is forever top dog. They hit the Newport Jazz Fest today. Keep an ear on the way keybster Jason Lindner casts insightful hues on all the action. Plus: the rhythm section destroys.
